Chief Tuskaloosa was a paramount chief of a Mississippian chiefdom in what is now Alabama. Chief Tuskaloosa is most known for leading the Battle of Mabila against the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto. The name Tuskaloosa means Black Warrior in the western Muskogean language. The city of Tuscaloosa is named after him and so is the Black Warrior River.
